HAVE YOU SUBSCRIBED?
I will be talking on “The pursuit of Happiness” Hephzibaaaah…. Which one is pursuit of happiness again oh…(#i tire for myself too oh, but just borrow me your heart and ears lets learn together)
Now to serious mode;
I watched a movie titled ‘Pursuit of Happyness”
please mind the spelling- Happynesss. Its deliberate. Yall should see the movie. It’s a true life story adopted into a movie. The movie revolves around the life struggles of a man named Chris Gardner, who was abandoned by his wife, had to survive with life as a single father to his ten year old son. Evicted from their apartment, he and his young son find themselves alone with no place to go. Even though Chris eventually lands a job as an intern at a prestigious brokerage firm, the position pays no money. The pair lived in shelters and endure many hardships, but Chris refuses to give in to despair as he struggled to create a better life for himself and his son. The movie ended on a good note, as Chris eventually pursued happiness.
So the big question is ‘are you in pursuit of your own happiness?’Please answer genuinely? (#not to me oh! Answer ya self) But be real with yourself on a scale of one to ten, rate yourself…. (use your hand to do yourself #lol), pls don’t mind me oh, sometimes, I feel I might need to pursue a career in comedy.. lolz.
Please note, Happiness is figurative for your dreams, goals and aspiration. Hephzibah, be serious now! Sorry folks, Serious mode again oh!
What is happiness?
According to my Encarta dictionary, (yours might be different from mine oh #winks), Happiness is ‘a feeling of pleasure or satisfaction’. Words synonymous with happiness are ‘contentment, pleasure, bliss, ecstasy etc. While according to Vocabulary.com (pls note, I do not own a copy, Mr Google borrowed me his own, and I used it on the online) A pursuit is a chase or or a quest for something. Derived from the Anglo-French purseute, pursuit means the act of pursuing or striving towards goals.
How, lets pick some key words in both definitions; ‘pursue, strive, goals, bliss, pleasure and contentment. Keep those words somewhere, (no use am chop food oh, we go soon come back to them.
As a matter of fact!
What makes you happy?
You have to define your OWN happiness. Happiness defers from person to person.
Did you know that in philosophy and (western) religion, happiness may be defined in terms of living a good life, or flourishing, rather than simply as an emotion. According to the Greek philosopher Aristotle (if you don’t know Uncle Aristotle, you are on a looooonnnng thing oh, I think he was my uncle in my former life…. Abi, maybe not!) Happiness is activity rather than an emotion. So we can say that happiness is MORE than a feeling.
(Now this one way I wan add, not crucify me oh, my spiritual life is still on fire), Did you know that according to the Buddhist, “Ultimate happiness is only achieved by overcoming craving in all forms. Note the words. Overcome and CRAVING. I can as well substitute Overcome with Pursuit and Craving with happiness. Definitely, whatever you crave must give you happiness. (Abi, shey you don hear of person way dey crave for bad thing ni? Plus am craving Cold stone Ice cream, if led by the Spirit, you can help my ice cream craving #seriously oh).
Before, we continue, let’s quickly branch to Uncle Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. (I fit understand if you don’t know Uncle Maslow, its fine, just ask Mr Googgle) Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is a pyramid depicting the levels of human needs, psychological, and physical. When a human being ascends the steps of the pyramid, he reaches self-actualization. Beyond the routine of needs fulfillment, Maslow envisioned moments of extraordinary experience, known as peak experiences, profound moments of love, understanding, happiness, or rapture, during which a person feels more whole, alive, self-sufficient, and yet a part of the world. This is what happened when you Pursue and attain Happiness.
How do you measure, Happiness? There are several scales for measuring happiness? Before I sound too scholarly, let me not bore you with all the details. Make I just drop the scales on the surface level. 1. The Subjective Happiness Scale (SHS). 2. The Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS) 3. The Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS). (pls, don’t ask me for explanations of any of the scales oh! Just google them, thank you)
But in my largesse I will only explain the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS). This is a global cognitive assessment of life satisfaction developed by Ed Diener. The SWLS requires a person to use a seven-item scale to state their agreement or disagreement (1 = strongly disagree, 4 = neither agree nor disagree, 7 = strongly agree) with five statements about their life. The only one I will pick is; What makes you happy?
Matter of fact, what makes me happy is different from what makes you happy. Happiness is an individual race and it must be pursued. Just like success is deliberate, Pursuing happiness is intentional. You have got to get all UP. Stretch yourself and make progress. Happiness is figurative for your life dreams and goals.
There was a time in my life, I was so unhappy. I had the certificate, skills, name it but I was not content. There was a very deep gulf in my life. Like I wanted more, but could not get it. I got tire of watching life happen to everyone else but me. I got tired of selling myself cheap and trading my happiness for everyone else. Did I just still sit, Noooooo! I go up and pursued and still then I still pursue. You see life does not just happen. It’s like a switch, you have to activate it.
Desire is never enough. Pursuit is what fuels your desire. In the words of Steve Harris, (I wish I could claim he is my uncle tho, bet how can I? He is not Yoruba, will I say he is from my mother brother uncles’ side? I don’t know oh!) he said and I quote, “driven by a fierce desire to live intentionally, make a difference and chase his greatness”. I love his use of his words, ‘fierce, intentional, difference and greatness’ that exactly my friend is the crux of my talk.
Even the Holy book says the ‘kingdom of God suffereth violence and the violent take it by force’. (my dear, the force is the issue, you need serious force pumping) You have got to be fierce, violent (I did not say you should go and blow somebody’s face oh) in the pursuit of your happiness. Please note, your Cheese will always be moved. (if you have not read, Who moved my cheese you are on a long thing. You better look for someone to email the e copy to you. Don’t say Hephzibah didn’t tell you oh) BUT really, you can’t continue to sit down and watch life happen to others. You got to PUISUE!
Lastly, what does it cost to be a Record-breaker (pursue your happiness) I will share 3 COST as shared by Bishop Oyedepo (if you haven’t see the video, you have to explain to Dr. 3ple.A what you have being doing on this group).
Cost 1: The Spiritual Cost: this can’t be over emphasis. You need to spend time in prayers, invest in the word. Grow spiritual stamina.
Cost 2: The Intellectual Cost: the more enlighten you are on any subject matter, the higher the level of command you gain. We need a working knowledge of any venture you are embarking on. It is information that gives value to every vision. You need adequate information. There is no mountain anywhere, a man’s ignorance is his mountain. Spend time reading, researching, attending empowerment/inspirational programs.
Cost 3: Physical strength: investment of time, ENERGY and resources. You need energy to maximize destiny. High level energy is a requirement for high level performance. Until, you are stretched enough you can’t spread enough. STRECH/PURSUE. Sell off your comfort, conveniences, traditional beliefs etc. The glory and colour of your destiny is in how much investment you are making into the work of your hand today
Lakotan ara mi (I love the Yoruba version, pls pardon me for the Yoruba, it simply means, ‘in conclusion brethen’) I didn’t consider myself to have attained, but this one thing I do, I continue to PURSUE and PURSUE my HAPPINESS. I invite you on this journey, its time to step out of your comfort zone, its time to stretch, its time to Become, it time to actualize your dream, it wont be an easy ride, truly, I won’t. Time waits for no one, so arise, be committed and lets get our HAPPINESS. It is attainable. Cheers to OUR SUCCESSES.
hope you were blessed.
